November is adopt a Senior Pet Month!

With age comes beauty and wisdom, and our senior canine companions are proof of that! That’s why the entire month of November is dedicated to providing them with the shelter and love they need and deserve. That’s right, November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month – a month dedicated to the celebration of the many paw-sitive things a senior dog has to offer!

Don’t get us wrong, we love adorable and playful puppies as much as the next animal lover, but we want to pay homage to our furry friends entering their golden years. So without further ado, here are 5 reasons why you should consider adopting a senior dog:

Minimal Training Required

Much like a baby, adorable youthful balls of fur, otherwise known as puppies often require around-the-clock care. Potty-training and puppy-proofing alone can cause your head to spin. Senior dogs, come with the grace and experience to know that the great outdoors is the best place to do their business and the best way to get there is by standing at the backdoor. They also tend to realize that gnawing on a well-chosen chew toy is superior to grabbing a new shoe or the remote control.

Easy Going and Adaptable

Senior dogs don’t need to work their way up from the confusing puppy years, and they’ve already passed through the wild and crazy teenage years. What they really want is a lap to snuggle up to, a warm place to sleep, fresh food and water, and a companion to love. If you want a dog that can fit right in, a senior dog may be exactly what you’re looking for. These pets are also great for elder owners who don’t want to go through the adventure of breaking in and molding a new puppy.

New Tricks? No Problem

When it comes to old dogs, we’re not buying into the rumors about their learning abilities. In fact, older dogs tend to have some of the basics, like “sit”, down. With the some patience and perhaps a hand full of their favorite treats, you can teach your senior pet a new trick or two.

What You See Is What You Get!

Not sure how big that puppy will grow? What about the temperament? Will they always been this bouncy? Lazy? Crazy? When you adopt a senior pet, what you see is typically what you get. By the time you leave the shelter, you’ll have a pretty good grasp on the answers to all the questions you would typically ask about a new puppy.

A Second Chance At Life

Last, but far from least, by adopting a senior pet, you get to give the gift of life. For many senior dogs, the shelter or rescue is a common place to go when their owners pass away, can no longer care for them, or sadly, want to trade in their beloved pet for a younger model.

By adopting a senior pet, you don’t only save them from the likelihood of never leaving the shelter, you give them a second chance at a loving and caring home. In essence, you’re their hero, and we think that’s reason enough.
