Dog Allergies - Causing the Itch?

Does your dog itch, scratch or bite particular areas of his body? Is the itching seasonal or year round? Does it occur more or less after being outside?

Dogs, like humans, sometimes suffer from allergies. Pets just display their symptoms differently. They don't sneeze, they itch. However, like us, allergies, and the constant scratching, can make your pet's life miserable. Generally speaking, allergic reactions do not improve as animals age, so consulting with your veterinarian is imperative to your dog's comfort.

Here are some common signs in pets who are suffering from allergies:

• Skin - May look red, scaly or crusty. Also may smell unclean, even after a bath. The dog will scratch and lick, most usually its groin, belly or elbows.
• Feet - May appear red between the toes. Light fur may be discolored brown from repeated licking. May also smell. Dogs will lick and chew their feet, toes and pads.
• Coat - May have bald spots from repeated licking or scratching. Light coats may be saliva-stained. The dog usually will scratch its sides and belly, either by licking, scratching or rubbing on carpets and furniture.
• Ears - May appear red inside and may have a waxy discharge and odor. Dog will scratch or rub ears with paws or on furniture.
• Eyes and Muzzle - May be red and have loss of hair from incessant itching. Dog will scratch or rub eyes and muzzle with paws or against furniture.

If your dog is displaying any of the above symptoms in excess, it is best to consult with your veterinarian. He or she will be able to determine what your dog is allergic to and develop a course of treatment that will be effective in restoring your pet's comfort.
