Are you looking for a purebred puppy? Are you having trouble finding a breeder for your canine of choice?
Dog shows are a good place to start your search. If you don't find a breeder of your particular dream puppy, ask other exhibitors for suggestions. Breeders are also listed in the most popular dog magazines such as "Dog Fancy," "Dog World" or the "American Kennel Gazette."
Breed clubs, both local and national parent clubs, are excellent sources for information on local breeders. The AKC has a public information line that provides information on how to contact these clubs (900-AKC-PUPS). Obedience training clubs, veterinarians, groomers, boarding kennels and pet supply stores can also be good sources for responsible breeders in your area.
For suggestions on contacting breeders of a specific dog breed, contact the dog associations listed below. They will refer you to the national breed club chairperson who will recommend breeders for you to contact. The American Kennel Club (AKC), and the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) are North American-based international registries with associated breeders and breed clubs in many countries around the world. The Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) is an international dog registry headquartered in Belgium that recognizes more breeds than any other single registry.
