Improper Use of Antibiotics
Share
Well-intentioned owners sometimes give their dogs antibiotics prescribed for humans or other animals. This should never be done. Not all dog breeds can take all types of antibiotics, and overdosing can cause serious, if not fatal side effects in your pet.
Penicillin can cause vomiting and diarrhea if a substantial amount has been consumed. To treat, induce vomiting by giving 1 teaspoon syrup of ipecac or 1 tablespoon of a 1:1 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water. Call your veterinarian immediately.
Streptomycin can cause permanent nerve damage. Signs include a tilted head and circling. Wrap your dog in a blanket and call your veterinarian immediately.
Nalidixic Acid, commonly prescribed for human bladder infections, causes vomiting, hypersensitivity, back arching and loss of balance. Convulsions and coma may follow. Induce vomiting by giving 1 teaspoon syrup of ipecac or 1 tablespoon of a 1:1 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water, and call your veterinarian immediately.
