October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month
Share
Dog is man's best friend. This fact derived from the contributions made to man by their canine friends throughout history. Today, they are no less special. They serve as loving companions and playful pets. They are entertaining, and they offer protection. Although there are many happy dogs that live with love and contentment, millions are homeless. It is time for people to return the friendship favor.
What This Little Holiday Entails
To create national awareness of the need for helping rescue homeless dogs, the ASPCA (American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) has initiated a special time of observance. While some people may not have a problem with pet-store purchases of a puppy or dog, the ASPCA believes rescuing an abandoned or neglected one is more heart-felt and rewarding. Based on a recent poll by Edge Research, which was sanctioned by the ASPCA, it is better to adopt because owners have better experiences than when purchasing.
Why the Holiday Started
Of the three to four million dogs in shelters around the country, only 20 to 30 percent find a home. This is unfortunate because so many of them are longing for the love and care of a kind human being. It is hoped that through the efforts of this officially recognized occasion, dog lovers would turn their hearts towards shelters. If you cannot adopt for whatever reason, the ASPCA encourages people to spread the word through word of mouth, social media, or any other means.
The Benefits of Adopting a Shelter Dog
According to the ASPCA, people who adopt their dogs from shelters report more long-term health benefits. They also state that the adoption process is easier than many people believe:
Dogs are loveable animals that deserve the adoration, care, and friendship of animal lovers. This nationwide holiday is the perfect opportunity for people to show how much they care about animals. They can adopt, not support potentially negligent puppy mills, and lend a hand at a shelter by donating supplies or your time.
