Senior Dog Care - Hip and Joint Supplements

Just as aging is inevitable for dogs, so are joint problems. As our furry friends enter "senior-hood," their bodies’ ability to make glucosamine and chondroitin — key building blocks for cartilage — is not enough to keep their existing cartilage healthy. Their movements become slower, and some activities, like climbing stairs and long walks, become increasingly difficult for them. The good news is there are a variety of supplements that can help keep your dog active and healthy.

Consulting your veterinarian is the first step. He or she can help rule out any significant problems and help choose the right supplements for your dog’s specific needs. Educating yourself on the different options will help you and your vet choose the best supplement regimen.

If your veterinarian agrees that your dog is suffering from hip and joint pain, he or she may prescribe medicinal supplements to help ease the discomfort. The most widely recognized ones are Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane).

Glucosamine and Chondroitin are two of the most well-known joint care supplements. Although both are essential supplements for healthy joints, they work better when used together than separately.

These supplements typically take six to eight weeks to show results. And while some pets will need them for the rest of their lives, these naturally occurring compounds are safe and show few side effects.

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is another widely-used ingredient in joint supplements. MSM contains sulfur, which plays an important role in collagen production and the formation of glutathione — a natural antioxidant that helps to neutralize free radicals in joints.

Look for Hip and Joint care formulas that include glucosamine, chondroitin, Omega 3 oils, antioxidants, and MSM. There are also a variety of veterinary-recommended products, such as Cosequin and Dasuquin.

If your pet is struggling with pain and inflammation, talk with your veterinarian about prescription medication NSAIDs, like Deramaxx and Previcox, for pain relief.
